The hydrocarbon secretion of Guggul contains a plant sterol, guggulsterone, which in the human body seems to act as an antagonist to the farnesoid X receptor. Furthermore, guggulsterone is active in increasing the natural thyroid production. This in turn stimulates the metabolism and may raise the body temperature, burning stored excess fat.

Sclareolide is a terpenoid, commonly won out of salvia sclarea, also called clary sage, which is a biennial herb. It grows predominantly in Europe and in Asia, but is most common in Syria, Italy, Switzerland and France. Sclareolide stimulates adenylite cyclase, which is an enzyme increasing cyclic adenosine monophosphate levels in the body. It actually increases your metabolism rate and turns energy into heat. The overall effect is that you burn more calories, whereby further energy is provided by extraction of fat from their storage spaces. The increased lipolysis leads to removal of excess fat, but also to much leaner physique and better muscle definition. Sclareolide may in excess dosages lead to vasodilatory effects, increasing thereby the blood pressure. Slight antidepressant action may also occur.
